Welcome to our review of the Leupold RX–1000I TBR Rangefinder. I love Leupold’s products in general, and was pleased when they began manufacturing rangefinders. The newest RX rangefinders are packed with features, but how well do they perform? Let’s take a look at one and find out.

What’s the Range of the Leupold RX–1000I TBR Rangefinder

This rangefinder advertises accurate laser ranges for up to 1,000 yards. Images through the rangefinder are magnified by 6X, so you can easily make out objects from afar. What’s the actual range capability like, though? I found that I could range deer from 600 yards and trees from 700 yards. To get the maximum 1,000 foot range, you have to be ranging a highly reflective object. Ranges are exceptionally accurate, with pinpoint precision to within one-half of a yard.

How Easy is the Leupold RX–1000I TBR Rangefinder to Use?

The Leupold RX–1000I TBR Rangefinder is very easy to use, with a quick set menu featuring one-handed controls. The buttons are large enough and textured enough to be simple and convenient, even in very poor weather, with sweaty hands, or with gloved hands.

The menu is intuitive and quick to move through, and the ability to calibrate the rangefinder to my rifle is a very nice feature. With the True Ballistic Range, you have four readouts for rifle shooting:

• MOA: the minutes of angle of elevation to adjust your riflescope for precise zero.
• HOLD: the number of inches or centimeters to hold over or under aim point on target
• MIL: the miliradians of angle of elevation to adjust your riflescope for precise zero
• BAS: the equivalent horizontal range for which you should hold for use with your bullet’s ballistics.

All in all, this is a feature-rich rangefinder that should meet any of your shooting needs with ease of use receiving top marks.

How is the Leupold RX–1000I TBR Rangefinder Powered?

The Leupold RX–1000I TBR Rangefinder is powered by a single CR2 battery. I wish it used AA batteries instead, since CR2 batteries can be hard to find when you’re in more rural areas. However, the battery life is quite good, advertised as at least 10,000 measurements. I don’t count how many times I use the rangefinder, but I can say that in two years of fairly heavy usage, I’ve never had to replace the battery.

What Features Can I Expect From the Leupold RX–1000I TBR Rangefinder?

This laser rangefinder is packed with all of the features you would expect from Leupold. It has all of the standard features, like continuous scanning for ranging fast-moving or multiple targets, and simple push-button operation. In addition to those features, though, Leupold has also built in True Ballistic Range mode, allowing you to fine-tune your rangefinder for your particular rifle. There is also a bow mode, which is great for getting accurate ranges and angles for bow hunting, as well as a line of sight mode for those times when you just want the distance between you and your target.

The Leupold RX–1000I TBR Rangefinder utilizes and advanced OLED display, which provides the readings in adjustable brightness settings. You can choose between low, medium or high. Unfortunately, the display can sometimes be difficult to read in direct sunlight. The image, however, is crystal clear with great contrast and clarity.

The lenses are fully multi-coated, and you have a clicking fast-focus wheel that works very well. The eyecups are fold down rubber, allowing you to use the rangefinder with or without eyeglasses. Field of view through the rangefinder is a wide 320 feet at 1,000 yards, giving you plenty of wiggle room to find your target and get its range.

What’s the Light Gathering Capability Like on the Rangefinder?

The OLED technology has the distinct advantage of providing you with 3X greater light transmission than a traditional LCD display, so you can use the rangefinder in extreme low light conditions with ease. It would be nice if there was more fine-tuning capability over the brightness of the display, but I’ve never had any problems with not being able to see my target through the display.

How Are the Optics and Focus on This Rangefinder?

Optics and focus are quite good on the Leupold RX–1000I TBR Rangefinder. As previously noted, you get fully multi-coated optics for fantastic light transmission, and the rangefinder is nitrogen-filled for fogproofing. Focus is quick and easy, allowing you to rapidly engage with your target and get its range with ease.

How Durable is the Leupold RX–1000I TBR Rangefinder?

How does waterproof, fogproof, and shockproof sound to you? I’ve dropped this rangefinder from my treestand a time or two, and there was never any damage done to it. Another reviewer noted that he accidentally left his rangefinder at the bottom of his treestand during an exceptionally bad thunderstorm, and the rangefinder survived the downpour without any problems.
